Yield: 2 dozen

Prep: 30 min

Cook: 20-25 min

Horn cookies from Italy.PNG

In Italy, many cookies are shaped with meaning, and horn cookies are inspired by the cornicello, a curved horn symbol that represents good luck.

These delightful little treats are often buttery, lightly sweet, and sometimes filled with chocolate, nuts, or jam. Their crescent shape makes them just as fun to look at as they are to eat.

Bake a batch and enjoy a little taste of Italian tradition with every bite.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup finely ground almonds

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ cup confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

  • 1 Tbsp milk for brushing

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

  3. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, ground almonds, baking powder, and salt.

  5. Mix Dry and Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until well combined.

  7. Brush with Milk: Lightly brush the tops of the horns with milk for a golden finish.

  8. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly golden.

  9. Cool: Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

  10. Dust with Powdered Sugar: Once cooled, dust the cookies with powdered sugar for a lovely presentation.
